Department-UNESCO Chair in Inter-cultural and Inter-religious Exchanges
Aim
Promote a better knowledge of the other by the comparative study of the various European religious and cultural groups, in particular in Eastern Europe and the Balkans; provide a postgraduate program based on a multidisciplinary approach of the cultural and religious realities of the area, taking into account the geographical, political and economic aspects; increase awareness on the necessity of having an inter-religious dialogue opened to young people, believers, laymen and the whole of civil society.
History
The Department-UNESCO Chair in Inter-cultural and Inter-religious Exchanges was established in 1999 at the University of Bucharest, Romania. This Department began its activity as an UNESCO Chair in 1999. It became Department in 2002.
IRD Activities
- Research
The Department has been involved in several research projects (e.g. 'Welfare and Values in Europe: Transitions related to Religion, Minorities and Gender', 'Translating God(s): Intercultural Theology and Interreligious Studies'). These research projects demonstrate that the interest of the Department goes far beyond EU and EEA. Given the fact that Romania with its Black Sea coast is one of Europe's open windows towards the larger Black Sea region and Central Asia, the UNESCO Department has assumed the role of a bridge builder between Europe and Central Asia. In this capacity, the Bucharest UNESCO Chair on the study of intercultural and interreligious exchanges became the initiator of the (worldwide) UNITWIN Network for Intercultural Understanding, as a developmental tool for existing or future possible relations among the UNESCO Chairs. The UNESCO Department currently places its focus on the role of multiple dialogue mediators between all the UNESCO Chairs interested in intercultural and interreligious topics
- Conferences / Meetings
The Department (co-)organizes congresses of the UNESCO Chairs and regional conferences/symposia for Central Asia UNESCO Chairs. Furthermore, Professor Martin Hauser and Lilian Ciachir undertake meetings and working visits.
