Aim
Encourage and help to the reflection and pastoral action of the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean.
History
The CELAM is the result of the First General Conference of Latin American Bishops. In August 1955, Bishops requested Pope Pius XII the creation of this Council, who approved in November of the same year. The Pope himself chose the location of the headquarters in Bogotá.
IRD Activities
- Institutional Relations Programme
Its objective is to cultivate relationships of communion, dialogue and service among ecclesial and non-ecclesial institutions. This programme aims to strengthen the relationship of communion and service in matters related to other Christian denominations and to cultivate, in communion with the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, dialogue with non-Christian religions in the region, especially with Jews, Muslims, and indigenous religions, and religions of African origin
- Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue Programme
This programme aims to assess the progress made with respect to ecumenism and interreligious dialogue within the Episcopal Conferences. It also intends to continue developing a process of rapprochement and mutual understanding with Pentecostalism and Latin-American Christian bodies, and to participate in relevant interreligious events.
