The Department for Ecumenism and Inter-Religious Dialogue maintains relationships with other Christian churches and Ecclesial communities (ecumenism) and with other faith based groups. Fruitful encounter is necessary to maintain good relationships as a faith-based community with other faith-based communities. The Department distributes documents from the Pontifical Councils and promotes dialogue with people of other denominations and faiths. In recent years the Directory for Ecumenism and the Document Fruitful Encounters for Inter-Religious Dialogue have been published. In collaboration with the Church Unity Commission and the South African Council of Churches, the department promotes the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
