Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in the Great Lakes and Horn of Africa
Aim
Promote a platform of interaction and solidarity building; strengthen members' capacity to articulate their needs and priorities in peace building and conflict transformation; advocate on issues of peace, justice, reconciliation and human security; develop effective information sharing among members, partners, and others; promote FECCLAHA's institutional development and sustainability; facilitate fellowship among members.
History
Officially launched ten years ago in March 1999, in Nairobi (Kenya).
IRD Activities
- Inter-religious Cooperation for Peacebuilding
FECCLAHA explores ways of intervening in the conflicts in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa region through the Religious Leaders Peace Initiatives in the Horn of Africa. Though not all the objectives of this initiative were achieved, the interfaith relationships and peaceful co-existence through exposure and joint work in peace making and reconciliation was greatly enhanced. Through this platform, FECCLAHA together with Africa Council for Religious Leaders and All Africa Conference of Churches hope to follow up on the commitments made at the Christian-Muslim Conference of 2007 in Dar es Salaam. In addition, FECCLAHA continued to strategically engage with Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa and Inter Faith Action for Peace in Africa in different peace-building initiatives in the region
- Inter-faith Collaboration and Cooperation for Peace
FECCLAHA is co-organising religious leaders' meetings representing the Christian Muslim faiths from Inter-Governmental Authority on Development countries. The participants, comprising mainly of religious leaders, deliberate upon a wide range of issues related to peace, security, and stability in the Horn of Africa within the context of inter-faith relations in the region. Results of those meetings are agreements on engaging in inter-faith dialogue, trust building, and collaboration for peace
- Great Lakes Ecumenical Forum (GLEF)
FECCLAHA together with All Africa Conference of Churches spearheaded the creation of GLEF at a consultative meeting attended by church leaders from Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. Among other objectives, GLEF aims at helping the ecumenical family in the Great Lakes Region and beyond to establish a common ground for advocacy, dialogue, and co-operation for peacebuilding and reconciliation in the region.
