Henry Luce Foundation
Aim
Bring important ideas to the centre of American life, strengthen international understanding, and foster innovation and leadership in academic, policy, religious and art communities.
History
The Henry Luce Foundation was established in 1936 by Henry R. Luce, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Time Inc., to honour his parents who were missionary educators in China. The Foundation builds upon the vision and values of four generations of the Luce family: broadening knowledge and encouraging the highest standards of service and leadership. A not-for-profit corporation, the Luce Foundation operates under the laws of the State of New York and aims to exemplify the best practices of responsible, effective philanthropy.
IRD Activities
- Theology
The Luce Foundation's Theology Program supports work at the intersection of theology, higher education, and public life. The programme encourages the development of religious leaders through theological education, fosters interdisciplinary scholarship that links the academy to religious communities and other audiences, and seeks to deepen public understanding of lived religion across multiple faith traditions. Programme support to date has focused substantially on accredited seminaries and divinity schools in the United States, with a particular emphasis on developing new models of theological education to prepare leaders for work in a religiously plural world. Grants have supported a number of approaches, including seminars for faculty, field experience and internships for students, the development of new curricula, and visiting professorships. Other programme interests have included religion and the arts, Asian religions, and world Christianity.
