Aim

Improve the human rights situation in Latin America and the Caribbean; serve as a meeting, training, and reflection space to promote common actions related to the strategic lines of the global network of Religions for Peace in Latin America and the Caribbean.

History

The Religions for Peace Latin American and Caribbean network was launched at the Consultation on Strategic Planning for Cooperation and Inter-Religious Dialogue in Latin America, held in São Paulo, on February, 2-4, 2004, in order to consider ways of cooperation among the religious communities for common action against violence, poverty, and inequality. The meeting approved unanimously to establish the Latin American and the Caribbean Council of Religious Leaders, which held its First Plenary Session, in Panama City, on June 22-23, 2006.

IRD Activities

  • Inter-religious Cooperation

    Since its inception in the region, Religions for Peace Latin America and the Caribbean is fostering inter-religious cooperation for promoting disarmament, working towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), responding to HIV and AIDS, addressing violence against women and children, organising the Latin American Inter-Religious Network on Peace Education (RILEP) and bringing together young people for interfaith understanding

  • Interfaith Summit

    The Latin American and Caribbean Regional Council-RfP and the Inter-Religious Council of Peru-RfP organised a series of multi-religious events during the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP20) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held in Lima, Peru 1-12 December 2014. One of the objectives of the Interfaith Summit was to convey the faith communities' concerns and proposals to decision makers. The Interfaith Summit adopted a statement that conveyed a message on the threat of climate change and the importance of a fair and ambitious outcome of the international climate negotiations.
